The church of St. Roman stands in the centre of Villodre as the town’s principal historic building. Construction began in the mid-15th century, using stone and rammed earth, in a Gothic style that has been transformed by various renovations carried out mainly during the second half of the 17th century. At the west end of the building stands the bell gable, with a stone structure housing the bells.
The church has a rectangular floor plan with a polygonal chevet and is organised into two naves separated by pillars, from which semicircular arches extend. These naves are covered by groined vaults, whilst the sections of the chevet feature ribbed vaults.
Inside, there are still some important works of art. In the Gospel nave there are two altarpieces: one is in the Neoclassical style, dating from the late 18th century, featuring a Crucifix from the same period. The second is in the Baroque style, from the second third of the 18th century, and houses a sculpture of the Immaculate Conception, created in the second half of the 17th century and linked to the style of Gregorio Fernández.
The Epistle nave preserves fragments of a late 15th-century Gothic tomb, decorated with angels holding heraldic shields and associated with the Martín Fernández de la Riva family, whose graves are also located inside the church.
In the presbytery, an 18th-century Rococo altarpiece is worthy of note, featuring sculptures of Saint Peter, Saint Paul and Saint Michael, alongside an image of Saint Roman, the church’s patron saint, carved in the 16th century and similar in style to the work of the sculptor Manuel Álvarez.
