Iglesia de Santa Eugenia, Villalaco

The Church of Saint Euphemia is the main religious and heritage building in Villalaco. It was built during the 16th century and underwent a major renovation in the 17th century, which altered its original structure. As a result of this work, the church lost its former Gospel nave and now features a two-aisle layout. The building consists of a central nave and a nave on the Epistle side, both covered with groined vaults. The chevet is distinguished by the use of star vaults, which are of greater technical and decorative complexity. On the outside, a small single-section tower is worthy of note, as is the elegant façade with its classical lines. The interior houses a remarkable collection of altarpieces and sculptures. On the Gospel side, several Baroque altarpieces from the second half of the 18th century are preserved, featuring depictions of Christ Crucified, the Souls in Purgatory and an image of Saint Mark with the Infant Jesus, the latter dating from the 17th century. The presbytery is presided over by an excellent Renaissance altarpiece of great artistic interest, which includes paintings attributed to Francisco de Baeza. These scenes depict episodes from the life of Saint Euphemia, alongside other key representations from the Christological cycle. The ensemble is completed by sculptures of the patron saint and a Calvary. In the Epistle nave there are two further altarpieces: a Baroque one, dedicated to Saint Anthony of Padua, dating from the mid-18th century, and another in the Rococo style which still contains a 14th-century Gothic Calvary, one of the oldest elements of the church.
