The parish church of Santa María la Real is undoubtedly the most outstanding monument in Cubillas de Cerrato. Although its current appearance is the result of 17th-century renovations, the building retains valuable Romanesque and Gothic-Mudejar features that survived subsequent alterations.
Construction began in the 13th century and it underwent extensive alterations for the first time in the 15th century. It has a rectangular floor plan, a chevet consisting of three chapels and a two-storey tower. On the south side stands a colonnaded portico and two windows with elegant ogee arches.
Inside, the highlights include the magnificent 16th-century high altarpiece, featuring twelve panels inspired by Italian masters, and two pieces of great interest: a 17th-century sculpture of the Virgin and Child and a painting of the apparition of Christ to Saint Teresa, attributed to Gregorio Martínez of Valladolid.
