The Venta de Baños Railway Museum is the place that best illustrates the town’s deep-rooted relationship with trains. It is located in the La Briquetera Cultural Centre, a former factory that produced coal briquettes – compressed fuel made from coal dust used to power locomotives. As we can see, this is a building closely linked to railway activity and to the industry that drove the town’s growth.
A tour of the museum offers an insight into the evolution of railways in Spain from the 19th century to the present day, with particular emphasis on the key role played by Venta de Baños as one of the main railway hubs in the north of the country.
Through original artefacts, documents, tools and uniforms, visitors can discover what the daily work of railway workers was like and how it changed over time. The museum also features models and reproductions of trains, stations and historic infrastructure, which help visitors understand how the railway operates and its importance in everyday life. Among the most notable exhibits are two passenger carriages open to the public and a Sentinel railcar, the only one of its kind in Spain, which is one of the collection’s major attractions.
During the summer months, the museum enhances the experience with a scale model train that runs around the outdoor circuit, an activity designed for all ages that offers a fun and educational way to learn about the railway.
