The Church of Saint Stephen is a sturdy Gothic church built between the 14th and 15th centuries. Whilst its exterior is remarkably austere, inside we can admire magnificent ribbed vaults with decorated keystones.
Numerous works of art have been preserved, notably several Gothic carvings, such as a Calvary and a crucified Christ incorporated into one of the Baroque side altarpieces. The second of these is presided over by a Renaissance-style Virgin and Child. Also Renaissance in style, and of great quality, is the small altarpiece set within one of the arched recesses known as arcosolia, depicting Saint Anne accompanied by the Virgin.
The most striking feature of the interior, as one might expect, is its high altarpiece, the work of Joaquín de Villandiego and dedicated to the church’s patron saint.
