Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Asunción, Reinoso de Cerrato

The church of Our Lady of the Assumption stands at the highest point of Reinoso de Cerrato. It was built in the 14th century on the site of an earlier church and extensively renovated in the 17th century, when it took on much of its current appearance. The exterior combines ashlar and masonry, materials characteristic of the rural architecture of the Cerrato region. Of particular note are the flat chevet and the southern façade, protected by a portico that traditionally served as a meeting place and ceremonial entrance. Its double bell gable supports the bells whose chimes have accompanied daily life in Reinoso for centuries. Inside, the single nave is covered by a groin vault decorated with 17th-century plasterwork, a feature that lends lightness and visual rhythm to the space. The interior buttresses reveal the original structure of the former barrel vault, which has since disappeared. The triumphal arch leads to the main chapel, crowned by an elegant 14th-century tierceron vault, a direct remnant of the medieval church. The collection of artefacts enhances the value of the church as a whole. Of particular note is the 16th-century carving of Saint Anne, the Virgin and the Child, as well as the image of Saint Lucy, attributed to the school of Gaspar Becerra, one of the most influential sculptors of the Spanish Renaissance. Finally, a painted altarpiece catches the eye; this is a rare feature that makes it one of the most unique elements of the church.
